NSANZ Auckland Chapter Newsletter AUGUST 2010

A word from our President

Dear Enthusiastic Speakers,

It’s been a very exciting year at NSANZ, and it has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as your President. I am also happy and honoured to continue to serve in the year ahead with the support of a committed and energetic team of fellow committee members.

We got off to a great start after the 2009 AGM with some highly engaging, energising, and information-packed meetings. Your committee this year worked so well together and put in many hours behind the scenes. Their efforts brought us the fantastic year we’ve enjoyed, and I am grateful for their support and encouragement.

Thank you to Linda Coles who spoke to us at our July meeting on ‘social media’ and building online relationships. Also, thanks to our MC Ann Andrews and all the breakout session facilitators who gave us who gave us their insights: Hannah Samuel, Jenny Wilmhurst and Kevin Andreassand (the Tweet Twins), Craig Garner, and Linda Coles.
We all share the common aspiration to inspire and empower people in some way, each with a unique perspective and a unique style.  I’m aware of how courageous you are, stepping out and beaming your light in your own  way.  We’re fortunate to have you adding your special sparkle to our cluster of shining stars!

Looking ahead, just prior to our 31st of August meeting, we will be showing a video of highlights from the 2010 NSAA convention from 6-7pm. This will be followed by our annual AGM at 7:30 where new committee members will be voted in. Following the brief AGM, Dr. Tom Mulholland and Ngahihi o te ra Bidois will be speaking to inspire and educate us, so please mark your calendar now.

Here’s to another year ahead together, with enriching and uplifting programs to continue to fuel our speaking passion and progress.

Best Regards

Sally Mabelle

August Chapter Meeting & AGM - Tuesday 31st

At our August meeting prior to our normal start time we will have a SPECIAL NSAA Convention 2010 highlights - on video at the Waipuna in our NSANZ meeting room from 6-7pm - come experience some of the high calibre speakers and energising atmosphere of the convention - second best thing to being there! At 7:30, the brief 2010 AGM will commence where our accredited members will vote in our new committee members. The AGM will be followed by two “local” international speakers and NSANZ Auckland Chapter members, Dr. Tom Mulholland and Ngahihi o te ra Bidois presenting as follows:

“What could possibly go wrong?” - Developing Attitudes for Speaking Success with Dr Tom Mulholland
Dr Tom Mulholland has given hundreds of presentations globally to companies like Google, Microsoft, Audi and Hilton.  He has hosted his own daily TV show “Dr Tom The Attitude Doctor”, toured with Mike King, featured on 60 minutes twice and given presentations to NSAA and in Asia on getting the right attitude for speaking.

He will talk about how to avoid and deal with events “turning to custard” and how your attitude will make the difference. Speaking is not all beer and skittles and the path to Professionalism is paved with many learning opportunities. He promises to share a few of these and some tricks of the trade on how to get yourself out of some tricky situations and giving your audience the best bang for their bucks.

Our second speaker is Ngahihi o te ra Bidois who is an international speaker and has delivered keynote presentations in many countries including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, USA, England, Australia and here in New Zealand. He has just returned from presenting a concurrent session at the NSA America convention in Florida and last year was invited to deliver a keynote to Google in New York. Ngahi is a renown keynote speaker who has received the NSANZ Speaker of the Year and Inspirational Speaker of the Year Awards (Auckland Chapter).

His presentation is entitled: Ten Keys for Keynote Presentations.

  • How can I make an excellent first impression in my presentations?
  • What is the difference between a Keynote and other deliveries?
  • How can I improve my story telling skills?
  • Who can help me to improve my keynote presentation?
  • How do I leave my audience inspired?

What's new with Wellington Branch

What HASN'T been happening in Wellington!! The howling wind, crazy rain, atrocious landslips on the motorways...and believe it or not, our fellow NSANZ members and guests still manage to carve out time to come and join our events, even when other networks have put their meetings on hold for the winter season.

Our first set of Professional Development, where Hannah Samuel kicked off the series with the first two competencies had a lovely turn-out - most of the attendees were members by that stage, and it's really shown that our initiative to start the Professional Development this year had paid off with a number of regular guests signing up as members just to take advantage of the series to up-skill, and continue to grow the speakers network!

Our July meeting created a great buzz around the branch, with a guest appearance of a dear friend, and professional voice coach Barbara Ann Grant from Nelson, dedicating her time to come up and kick off the night with some valuable voice exercises, helping us find our own, authentic voice.

Following the interactive session, was John Bishop's presentation about marketing your speaking business, where he outlined the different types of speakers as well as sharing his own experiences on the speaking circuit to date. We were also privileged to be one of the first events where John announced his candidacy for the Lambton Ward in the upcoming elections.

As for progress of the branch, we are looking forward to our next set of Professional Development workshops, with Greg Ward and David Clarkson, and I anticipate, and appreciate that the NSANZ community can rustle up some Wellington contacts in the upcoming months to get them involved, and enrolled in our evolving branch!
Details of the August Branch Meeting - Thursday 26th  - can be viewed here.
